I'm Officially a Portland Local
2,300+ miles, 3 1/2 days and 10 states later, we’ve completed our move from Memphis, TN to Portland, OR.
Wow, what a drive! The Oregon countryside is breathtaking. Wyoming and Utah were also beautiful, but the drive alongside the Columbia River in Oregon made the trip that much more enjoyable.
My wife and I, along with a long-time friend of ours, took one of the most amazing cross-country drives you could take. We’ve been planning the move to Portland for some time, and now we’re officially here.
One of the primary reasons for moving to Portland was to consolidate Active Reload into one city. We’ll be sharing an office with the talented guys over at Kongregate and couple people from Caboo.se. I expect some exciting things to happen as a result of this.
In addition to the Active Reload news, Portland is just a great city full of talented people, not to mention the excellent food and topnotch beer. If you’re in Portland, maybe we’ll get together and experience some of that great food and beer.

DoubleClick and Define using Apple Dictionary
var selection; if(window.getSelection) selection = window.getSelection(); else if(document.selection) selection = document.selection.createRange(); document.observe("dblclick", function() { if(navigator.userAgent.include("Macintosh")) { location.href = "dict://" + selection; } });A quick (and probably dirty) Prototype-based hack allowing Mac users to get the definition of any word by double clicking it.

It’s been 7 1/2 years since I moved to Portland from California. It’s been one of the best decisions. Welcome to the city and I hope that to see more of you in person! :-)
Welcome to Portland. It’s great having more talented developers to pool from. And welcome to the rain!
I don’t miss the rain at all, but I sure do miss Coffee People… I vaguely recall the drink being called the ‘Slammahamma’ or some such. :-)
@robby: Thanks. Looking forward to it!
@Jesse: The rain and the short Winter days. I’ve been told the sun doesn’t set until about 10pm in the Summer, so I guess that makes up for it. :-D
@Spacemonkey: I might have to look for that brew.
I’m making the move to Portland in January along with my company WeoGeo.
It’s exciting to see all the Rubyists and other talented people that I’ll soon be neighbors with.
Justin,
One thing to note… is that native Oregonians won’t let you get away with calling yourself a “local” until you’ve been here about 10 years. It’s been 7 1/2 and I am still a “Californian” to them. ;-)
Very brave to travel across the mountains this time of year! I did it in October and had a freak snow storm in Wyoming when I moved to Portland 8+ years ago. Good luck!
I’ll clean the desks and do daily computer maintenance for a couch to loaf on. Oh, and a photo workshop weekend that I owe you.
hmm.. somehow i don’t think just setting up in portland will make you a local, I’ve been in my current town since i was 2 years old, and i’m still not considered a local. Although setting up your stuff with caboo.se and such is great news, maybe we’ll see the fruits of this in some of your app’s near futures :)
For the sake of semantics, we’ll say “resident”, but “local” isn’t the same as “native”.
Welcome to the beautiful Pacific Northwest! I hope you enjoy the excellent public transit system we have, which is oh so nicely integrated into Google Maps, and I hope you get to enjoy Portland’s common status as the most bike-friendly city in the country (and one of the friendliest in the world). I hope to cross paths with you some time.
